Blasting is done by workers in the construction field and in the mining field. It is a dangerous operation regardless of where it is done. Blasting safety is important because if done incorrectly, people can be injured or killed.

Considerations

Employees who will be handling explosives should receive proper training before they begin work. When explosives are transported, the vehicle must have a fire extinguisher and be attended by the driver or other qualified employee.

Warning

Blast areas must be cleared of employees before the explosion happens. Typically, the blaster-in-charge will give two warnings, one five to 10 minutes before and another one to two minutes before the blast. The "all-clear" signal must be given before anyone re-enters the blast area.

Prevention

Know where the safe area is when a blast is going off, and make sure to remain in it. When the blast goes off, watch for flying debris that may travel out of the blast area. Attempt to find a safe spot that protects from debris both above and from the side, but do not use glass as a shield, as it could break.
