Employers must maintain workplace safety. Regular safety meetings are an important part of this process. Most employees cringe at the thought of attending another safety meeting, but this is not how it has to be. There are various ways to make these meetings more engaging and fun, so workers are happy to learn about procedures and safety tips that create a safer work environment for everyone.

Games

During the meeting, play a friendly, competitive trivia game to reinforce safety knowledge in a playful way. Split the employees up into teams, and have one buzzer for each team. Pose questions to employees about various safety issues. The first to hit his buzzer and have the correct answer wins a point for his team. Give each member of the winning team a prize, such as candy, office supplies, an extra hour for lunch with pay or other reward.

Role Playing

Get employees actively involved in learning about safety through role playing. This lightens the mood and often gets everyone laughing and smiling while still learning important information. Choose employees to act out different workplace scenarios that display common safety problems. Before an issue is resolved, stop the actors and ask the others what mistake was made or what they would do to rectify the situation. This is a refreshing interactive experience.

Videos

Search online or in magazines and stores for videos about workplace safety issues such as OSHA regulations, workplace violence, equipment use, fire safety or issues specific to your industry. Keep the video collection current. Nothing turns off employees faster and creates a quicker distraction than a safety video from the 1970s. If you have the resources, your company can keep things fresh and fun by making its own safety video with actual employees. Workers will enjoy watching these and may even pay more attention.

Speakers

Invite a public speaker to the meeting who is expert in workplace safety. Find one with a presentation that engages audiences and provides an entertaining yet insightful lesson for attendees. Consider speakers who have been injured on the job. Policemen, firemen and other community members can also bring a lot of insight into local safety issues.

Free Food

Turn employee safety meetings into events that workers look forward to by rewarding them for long periods of time with fewer (or no) accidents or injuries. After the safety meeting, hold a special catered luncheon for employees. This showing of respect for employees and acknowledgment of a job well done will be very much appreciated. Workers will be extra vigilant in order to earn free food for subsequent meetings.

Employee Input

Allow time during the meetings for questions or to addressing employees' safety concerns. They need to know they are being heard and can feel comfortable raising concerns. Place a suggestion box in the break room where employees can submit safety issues needing to be addressed. At the meeting, read these submissions to drum up discussion.
