Hazard signs can be anywhere, from the trailer of a semi-truck rolling down the street to containers of toxic materials, or even the needle depository in a doctor's office. Some signs are easy to read and decipher, but others are a little less obvious. The key to reading hazard signs is to know what the symbols mean.
Radioactive material, explosives and poisons There are four signs that alert people to poisons. The poisonous peroxides sign is yellow and features what looks like an O with flames on top of it, and also says "oxidizer" beneath the symbol.
The organic peroxide sign is also yellow and features the same symbol, but has "organic peroxide" printed beneath the symbol.
Etiologic and other poisonous materials signs are white. One has what looks like a blade of wheat with a black "x" on it and says, "Harmful, stow away from foodstuffs." The second features a skull and crossbones with the word poison "printed" beneath the symbol.
Signs for radioactive materials all feature the same circle with three "fans" around it. There are three levels of radioactive signs: The first is all white, features the radioactive sign and says "Radioactive I." The second and third show the radioactive sign, are yellow on top and white on the bottom and have the words "Radioactive II" and "Radioactive III."'
The explosives sign is orange and has an explosion on it and says "explosive."
Corrosives, flammable liquids and gases Non-flammable gas signs are green and feature an oxygen tank and the words "Non-flammable Gas." Poison gas signs are white with a black skull-and-crossbones and say "Poison Gas." Flammable gas signs are red, feature white flames and have the words "Flammable Gas" on them. Oxygen signs are yellow, feature a flaming O on them and the word "Oxygen."
Flammable liquids signs are red, feature flames and read "Flammable Liquid." Bio-hazard signs are white and feature the bio-hazard symbols on them and say "infectious substance." Signs marking corrosive materials are white on top, black on the bottom and show a broken test tube spilling onto a hand or table. This signs says "Corrosive."
Flammable solids, dangerous, biodmedical materials, spontaneously combustable A sign that is light blue, features flames and says "Dangerous When Wet" marks a material that becomes harmful when wet. Signs that mark flammable solids have red and white horizontal stripes, feature flames and say, "Flammable Solid."
For materials that can burst into flame spontaneously, the signs are red on the bottom, white on top, feature flames and say "Spontaneously Combustible."
Signs for biomedical materials are red and white, feature the bio-hazard symbol and say "Biomedical Material," along with other warnings.
