Powder Actuated Tool Safety Tips

Powder actuated tools are often nail guns or other types of hand tools that get there power from a tiny explosive charge that forces the nail out of the gun at a high speed. Powder actuated tools are made to force nails into materials such as concrete and steel which a normal nail and hammer could never get through. Since the force required for this task is extremely high this types of tools can be deadly if used incorrectly. Following powder actuated tool safety tip will help you remain safe at work.

Tips For Powder Actuated Tools Safety

  • Never ever under any circumstances point a powder actuated tool at another person. Even if the tool is not on. There have been cases of accident misfires that have caused serious injuries.
  • You should only use this tools once you have been trained to work them properly.
  • When the nail gun is not in use it should not be loaded
  • Never put your hand on the area near the muzzle or on the muzzle of the tool. If you move or misfire the nail could injury your hand.
  • Always wear protective safety goggles or a face shield. The goggles will protect only your eyes while the mask will cover your entire face. The choice is yours to make but I feel safer with the full face mask.
  • Keep your PAT clean at all times and have it maintained annually to insure it is working correctly.
  • Do not use in areas near flammable since they sometimes spark and this could cause an explosion.
  • Check the surface area before you begin working. Make sure there are no nails already in the area and that the new nails will be able to go through.


This are just a few powder actuated safety tips. You should train all employees to use PAT’s correctly and safely. Proper training and teaching is the only way to prevent injuries and fatalities in the workplace. It is every persons job to use their head and think safety at work.
